Criminal Defense

We represent the accused. We do not represent the government.

We defend all manner of criminal cases and have represented clients during all stages of the criminal process. Sometimes clients come to us after they have been handcuffed and charges have been filed. If that’s where you find yourself, you need experienced trial lawyers who have walked this precarious path hundreds of times before. Accusations with potential criminal consequences come in other forms too—your employer notices that money is missing and believes you are responsible, a police officer knocks on your door and attempts to interrogate you, your child is brought to the principal’s office for questioning. No matter how a case starts, an allegation of criminal wrongdoing should never be taken lightly because your freedom is at stake.

We are former government lawyers. We know the players and we know the playbook. We’ll bring that experience to bear for you. At Fautsch Tursi, you’ll always know what evidence the government has, the full scope of potential outcomes, and the risks and costs you are facing. We’ll always give you our honest assessment of your case and straightforward advice on how best to proceed. Our job is to zealously advocate for you to obtain the best possible result and we take that job seriously, whether that involves telling your story to the jury, negotiating a plea deal, championing you at a sentencing, or arguing the law on appeal.

Whatever your situation may be, at Fautsch Tursi, we are vigorous advocates who get results.

Personal Injury

We represent people who are injured. We do not represent insurance companies.

Slips happen. Falls happen. And more broadly, accidents happen. The effects of which can be life changing. At Fautsch Tursi, we handle every kind of case where a person is injured in an accident, including car accidents, slip and falls, medical malpractice, and wrongful death. In all cases, our goal is to secure maximum compensation for our clients to help them fully recover.

Unlike many plaintiffs’ personal injury lawyers, we have worked for defendants and insurance companies in the past. We speak their language and understand how to tell your story in a way that leads to a fair resolution.

But not all cases can be resolved before trial. Some cases must be resolved by a jury. When it comes to the courtroom, Fautsch Tursi has deep experience that separates us from other lawyers because we take cases to trial when it is the right thing to do. Because we also try criminal defense cases, we see the inside of a courtroom more than many other lawyers. We have each obtained verdicts in excess of $10 million for our clients and we will use those experiences to ensure that you receive the compensation you deserve.

We have handled small, simple cases and big, complex cases. Examples of cases we have handled include:

  • Wrongful death after an accident at work.
  • Injuries and deaths caused by plane crashes, boating accidents, helicopter accidents, and car crashes.
  • Illness and reactions caused by prescription drugs.
  • Medical malpractice involving infections, misdiagnosis, and improper care.

Family Law

We represent people in all aspects of family relations: divorce, child custody, complex property division, mediation, trial, and appeal.

Choosing a family law attorney is a difficult and personal decision. The attorney you choose is going to walk with you during a difficult time when it is hard to know the right path forward.

At Fautsch Tursi, we appreciate that divorce is personal. It implicates our clients’ cultural, social, religious, and spiritual values. It impacts our clients’ financial, medical, and mental health. And, in many cases, the process requires our clients to make major decisions for the people who matter most to them—their children. We strive to know our clients on a personal level, inform them about the law, and help them reach a resolution that aligns with their values while protecting their rights.

No matter what family situation you currently find yourself in, Fautsch Tursi will work closely with you to develop the best strategy for handling your case and bringing resolution to your life.

Local Counsel

All law is local. At Fautsch Tursi, experience has taught us that the law is often applied a little differently depending on the county, clerk of court, and judge involved in a case. In high stakes cases, little differences can have a big impact. We work with attorneys from around the United States as local counsel and co-counsel on state and federal cases throughout Iowa. We can play a major role in the case or narrowly tailor our work to our clients’ needs. We can provide insight on the nuances between various counties, local judges, and filing practices in Iowa. We have tried cases throughout Iowa in urban and rural counties. We are in court and interacting with judges because we maintain a diverse practice, including taking court-appointed criminal cases (which we believe is the best way to know a courthouse). We are both Fellows in the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers, and we have personally appeared in cases—and won—before Iowa’s appellate courts. In short, we know Iowa judges and juries because we live in their communities, have relationships with them, and appear before them as lawyers frequently.
